Massive power outages struck Havana and western Cuba on Wednesday, leaving millions without electricity. Moreover, the blackout highlights the island’s ongoing energy crisis.

Lázaro Guerra, general director of the Ministry of Energy and Mines, said a transmission line connecting two major plants failed. Consequently, power would be restored gradually across affected areas.

In Havana, police officers directed traffic while many students were sent home. Small businesses with generators reopened, especially food vendors. However, some neighborhoods experienced intermittent internet, leaving residents confused and frustrated.

“There’s no connection. No one knows why the power is out… They’re not saying anything; it’s all silence,” said Raúl Calderón, an 82-year-old retiree. Similarly, many citizens relied on radios for updates.
