A proposal to establish a whale sanctuary in the South Atlantic Ocean has once again failed to gain enough backing at the International Whaling Commission (IWC).

Supporters of the measure argued that the sanctuary would provide additional protection for whale populations across a large section of the South Atlantic. However, the proposal did not secure the level of support required for approval.

The sanctuary, proposed by Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay, received 39 votes in favour and 18 against.

The issue has been debated within the IWC for years, with member countries remaining divided on the best approach to whale conservation and the management of marine resources.

The latest vote means the proposed sanctuary will not move forward at this time, though advocates are expected to continue pushing for similar protections in future discussions.
