Antigua, US to Resume Deportee Talks
Antigua and Barbuda and the United States are expected to resume discussions on a proposal that could see the twin-island nation accept a limited number of third-country nationals removed from the US.
Ambassador Sir Ronald Sanders said the talks will resume at the request of the United States and will be guided by a parliamentary framework approved earlier this year. The framework preserves Antigua and Barbuda’s authority to approve or reject each individual on a case-by-case basis and rejects any automatic or open-ended arrangement.
Officials say any potential agreement would have to address issues such as identity verification, legal status, security, accommodation, funding, and responsibility for onward movement or return.
The government has stressed that no final agreement has been reached and that no third-country national has been approved for transfer under the proposed arrangement.
