Antigua and Barbuda Hosts OECS Skills Programme
Antigua and Barbuda will host a new regional training programme. Importantly, it focuses on the services sector. It also targets stronger skills across the OECS region.
In addition, the programme is part of a wider regional consultancy project. It is titled “Technical Support to OECS Independent Protocol Member for Specialized Training to Strengthen and Enhance Knowledge Capacity, Policymaking and Negotiating Skills of Public and Private Sector Stakeholders in the Services Sector.” Furthermore, it supports regional cooperation and development.
The initiative falls under the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS). This group includes Antigua and Barbuda, Dominica, Grenada, Montserrat, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. Moreover, it aligns with the Revised Treaty of Basseterre. This treaty created the Eastern Caribbean Economic Union and promotes deeper integration.
Officials say the timing is important. For example, member states are working to strengthen their global competitiveness. At the same time, they face global economic pressure. In particular, COVID-19 has left long-term effects on services industries.
Therefore, the programme targets key groups. These include trade officials, policymakers, business support organisations, and private sector workers. Each group will receive training suited to its role.
Next, the programme includes several activities. First, organisers will design a national training plan for each country. Then, they will hold workshops to build practical policy and negotiation skills. After that, they will run awareness seminars for stakeholders.
In addition, these seminars will cover key topics. For instance, participants will study trends in services and non-traditional sectors. They will also review trade in services rules. Furthermore, they will examine barriers that limit trade. Finally, they will learn how to use market data more effectively.
Training will take place in a hybrid format. As a result, more participants can join both online and in person. This approach improves access across the region.
Ultimately, the programme aims to improve competitiveness. It also helps countries use trade agreements more effectively. In addition, it supports better regulation and stronger economic planning.
Finally, stakeholders in Antigua and Barbuda can contact the Ministry of Trade for registration details and support.
