Cabinet has approved plans for a new modular prison facility at the Prison Farm in Potworks Dam as part of the Government’s response to rising crime and overcrowding at the existing prison.

The first phase will accommodate about 150 inmates. The facility will be developed in stages, allowing the Government to expand capacity when needed.

Cabinet also plans to eventually phase out the existing 1735 Prison in St. John’s. The facility, which dates back to the nineteenth century, has faced longstanding capacity problems and overcrowding.

Officials said the new prison will form part of a wider effort to strengthen the justice and national security systems. Cabinet also emphasized the need for rehabilitation and skills programmes to help reduce repeat offending.

In healthcare, Cabinet received an update on Antiguans and Barbudans receiving treatment in Colombia. Thirty-seven patients are currently there. Officials said all patients remain safe following the recent earthquake, although one of the three hospitals treating them was affected.

Cabinet was also informed that the new Sickle Cell Centre will open next week. In addition, the new autopsy suite and mortuary at the former Holberton Hospital compound are expected to become operational by the end of August.

The Government will then focus on improving community health clinics, including the Browne’s Avenue and All Saints clinics.

Cabinet also agreed to strengthen measures against littering and illegal dumping. The Litter Act will be reviewed, while litter wardens will receive cellphones to improve communication and reporting.

Police will also provide greater support for enforcement, including issuing tickets to people who litter. The Government plans to replace bins in St. John’s and continue removing derelict vehicles from public spaces.

Meanwhile, dredging at Crabb’s Harbour has been completed, clearing the channel for larger vessels, including LNG ships serving APUA. Blue Ocean will now move its equipment to St. John’s Harbour for the next phase of dredging.

Cabinet also approved a $250,000 Creative Industries Development Fund to support local artistes. Selected Carnival 2027 shows will also be offered through international pay-per-view platforms.

Additionally, three businesses received loans through the Entrepreneurial Development Programme. The financing will support expansion in retail, tourism and agriculture, including a new commercial facility, a passenger van and hydroponic farming infrastructure.
