Rising fuel prices have sparked protests in several countries as higher energy costs put pressure on households, workers and businesses.

Oil prices recently moved above US$100 per barrel amid disruptions linked to the ongoing US-Iran conflict and renewed fighting in Yemen. The higher costs have also raised concerns about household expenses and essential services.

Governments are now taking steps to manage the impact. In Pakistan, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif approved an energy conservation campaign. The measures include cutting fuel allocations for government vehicles by 50% for three months. Emergency and other essential services will remain exempt.

Protests Spread Across Countries

In Syria, fuel price increases led to demonstrations in several areas. The government raised diesel prices by about 40% and increased gas prices by more than 25%.

The higher prices have affected people’s purchasing power and added pressure to already strained public services. Some protesters blocked roads and burned tires during demonstrations.

Guatemala has also seen protests over rising fuel costs. Truckers and other groups blocked highways in several areas. Congress is considering legislation that would cap fuel prices until the end of the year.

In Portugal, about 80 people protested in Espinho over fuel prices and the wider cost of living. Local business leaders organized the demonstration and marched to the home of Prime Minister Luís Montenegro.

The Portuguese Firefighters’ League has also warned that higher fuel costs are putting pressure on fire brigades and volunteer organizations. The government has announced support for freight transporters, taxi drivers, firefighters and social services.

Pressure on Workers

In France, about 50 fishermen blocked a fuel depot in Fos-sur-Mer to protest rising fuel costs. The demonstration lasted several hours and included a brief clash with police.

In the Philippines, transport workers from Manibela went on strike over fuel price increases. They called for government subsidies and the removal of fuel taxes.

Petroleum companies raised gasoline prices again this week. Diesel and kerosene prices also increased.

The higher costs have affected drivers, families and businesses. Philippine officials are considering measures that could reduce taxes on petroleum products.
