Antigua Sailors Shine at BVI Dinghy Championship
Antigua sailors delivered strong performances at the 2026 BVI Dinghy Championship in Tortola. Moreover, the Antigua Yacht Club youth sailing programme earned top regional results during the two-day event.
The annual championship took place on May 16 and 17 at the Royal BVI Yacht Club. Throughout the competition, Antigua’s young sailors faced a competitive regional fleet in the Optimist division.
Under the guidance of Head Coach Karl James MBE, the team competed in a demanding 10-race series. Additionally, the sailors demonstrated strong tactical ability, speed, and consistency on the water.
The Optimist fleet produced close racing across both days. However, Antigua sailor Lluc Agusti stood out with a dominant performance throughout the championship.
Agusti secured first place overall after consistently finishing near the top of the fleet. He recorded six first-place finishes, two second-place finishes, and one fourth-place result during the series.
As a result, Agusti captured the overall championship title impressively. His strong boat handling and ability to read shifting winds helped separate him from the competition.
Officials also praised his management of changing currents during the races. Furthermore, his consistency across the event played a major role in securing victory.
Meanwhile, teammate Ruben Van Hest also delivered an excellent performance for Antigua. He remained competitive throughout the 10-race series, consistently challenging the leading sailors.
Van Hest eventually secured fourth place overall after showing determination and a steady pace across both days of racing.
The Antigua Yacht Club programme continues to develop young sailing talent within the region. Additionally, the latest results highlighted the team’s growing strength in youth competition.
Coach Karl James MBE guided the sailors through the championship as they competed against regional rivals in Tortola. The event once again showcased the high level of youth sailing talent across the Caribbean.
Overall, Antigua’s sailors left the BVI Dinghy Championship with strong finishes and another major regional success for the Antigua Yacht Club youth programme.
