CARICOM

CARICOM observers praised Antigua and Barbuda’s election. They said voters took part peacefully and without major problems.

The CARICOM Election Observation Mission shared its interim findings on Friday. It will later submit a full report to CARICOM’s Secretary General.

Maxine McLean led the mission. She serves on Barbados’ Electoral Commission. She said the team included six regional experts.

Meanwhile, observers covered most constituencies. They visited 16 of 17 constituencies. They also checked 182 of 185 polling stations.

McLean reported smooth election-day operations. Polling stations opened at 6 a.m. on time. Supplies also arrived early.

As a result, voting began without delay. Party agents also attended polling stations. Each party placed two agents at each station.

In addition, police officers supported the process. The mission said police presence was adequate. Officers helped maintain order.

Voters cast ballots in a calm setting. Therefore, observers described the process as peaceful. They found no major incidents.

Turnout rose in the morning. It also increased before polls closed at 6 p.m. However, fewer voters arrived at midday.

Election staff supported voters throughout the day. Information clerks helped people check voter lists. Staff also assisted elderly and disabled voters.

Observers said polling staff acted professionally. At 6 p.m., most queues had cleared. However, officials allowed people still in line to vote.

After voting ended, observers watched ballot handling. They saw ballot boxes sealed and moved to counting centres. They also observed the count.

Importantly, agents and observers stayed present during counting. McLean said the process followed proper procedures.

She praised election workers. She said they performed their duties well. Therefore, the mission commended their professionalism.

The mission also praised the police. It described officers as respectful and professional. They helped ensure a calm atmosphere.

Before election day, the team met key stakeholders. These included political leaders, police, and election officials. They also met media representatives.

These meetings helped the mission understand election readiness. They also provided insight into the political climate.

Finally, CARICOM restated its support for Antigua and Barbuda. It pledged continued backing for democratic progress. A final report will follow soon.
