PM Browne Pushes OECS Energy and Trade Plans

PM Gaston Browne says he plans to strengthen regional cooperation when he assumes chairmanship of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States Authority next month.

Meanwhile, Browne outlined plans for deeper collaboration in energy, transportation, trade, and logistics across the OECS.

Speaking on Pointe FM, the prime minister said closer regional ties could lower costs and improve economic stability throughout the Eastern Caribbean.

“So what I’m going to try and do is certainly to see how I can help to accelerate greater collaboration and cooperation within OECS,” Browne said.

Additionally, Browne pointed to ongoing geothermal energy talks involving Antigua and Barbuda and St. Kitts and Nevis. He said both countries continue discussions on an undersea transmission link between Nevis and Antigua.

According to Browne, Antigua and Barbuda could purchase geothermal power generated in Nevis. He said the arrangement could reduce dependence on fossil fuels.

“So we can run a line from Nevis to Antigua,” Browne said.

Furthermore, he explained that the European Union is considering major financial support for geothermal development in St. Kitts and Nevis.

Browne also said Antigua and Barbuda agreed to purchase power from the project. He noted that the agreement could help make the initiative commercially viable.

At the same time, Browne called for stronger regional transportation links. He said Antigua and Barbuda supports the creation of an OECS airline.

“We are pushing to have St. Kitts, Nevis, and other OECS countries support the creation of an OECS airline,” he said.

In addition, Browne highlighted Antigua’s port expansion plans. He suggested the country could serve as a logistics hub for OECS shipping operations.

“We may be able to consolidate shipments here,” Browne explained.

He also revealed that discussions continue with a major global shipping company. According to Browne, negotiations could conclude within 30 days.

Moreover, the prime minister supported joint procurement systems and shared diplomatic missions among OECS states. He argued that those measures could lower operating expenses.

“We don’t have to have an embassy in every capital,” Browne said.

Overall, Browne said stronger regional integration could help reduce energy and living costs while improving long-term sustainability for small island states.
