Drug Accused Complains of Bed Bugs at HMP

Drug

Drug accused Semand Vivan Shammo Aljndo has complained about bed bugs at His Majesty’s Prison. Meanwhile, the issue has again raised concerns about prison conditions.

Aljndo is a 23-year-old Canadian national. He is currently on remand for drug trafficking charges.

On Wednesday, he interrupted court proceedings. He told Chief Magistrate Ngaio Emanuel that bed bugs were biting him.

As a result, he asked to be moved to another cell. However, the magistrate directed him to speak with his attorney.

His lawyer is Michael Archibald. Therefore, the complaint was not addressed directly in court.

Meanwhile, the issue has brought renewed attention to conditions inside HMP. Reports of bed bug infestations have surfaced for several years.

In addition, inmates and families have repeatedly raised similar concerns. Reports dating back to 2020 describe widespread infestation.

According to those reports, very few cells are free of bed bugs. Therefore, the problem appears ongoing.

Aljndo has been held at HMP since March. Authorities deemed him a flight risk after his arrest.

He was arrested at V.C. Bird International Airport on March 21, 2026. Officers intercepted him upon arrival.

The operation involved the Narcotics Department, K-9 Unit, and Customs Enforcement Unit. Meanwhile, authorities conducted a search of his luggage.

Officials reportedly found 26 vacuum-sealed packages of cannabis. The alleged street value is EC $208,000.

As a result, he faces multiple drug-related charges. These include possession, importation, and trafficking.

He also faces charges of intent to transfer and being concerned with supply. Therefore, his case remains serious before the court.

Meanwhile, prosecutors told the court that the case file is still under review. As a result, the trial has been delayed again.

The matter has now been adjourned to June 15 for committal. For now, Aljndo remains on remand at HMP.
