Turner Honors Centenarians During Special Week

Turner

Antigua and Barbuda’s centenarians have played an important role in shaping the nation through decades of service, sacrifice, and resilience, according to Minister for Social and Urban Transformation Rawdon Turner. As the country observes Centenarian Week, Turner paid tribute to citizens who have reached 100 years of age and beyond. He described them as “living history” and said their lives reflect the values, struggles, and achievements that helped build modern Antigua and Barbuda.

In a message marking the occasion, Turner said centenarians are more than people who witnessed important events. He said they lived through periods of change and contributed to the growth of families, communities, and the nation. According to the minister, their experiences offer valuable lessons for younger generations. He highlighted qualities such as perseverance, faith, determination, and love as defining characteristics of many centenarians. He also noted that their guidance and wisdom continue to benefit society today.

Turner extended his appreciation not only to centenarians but also to all senior citizens across Antigua and Barbuda. He said the contributions of older citizens cannot be measured by money or statistics. Instead, he said their impact can be seen in the strength of communities, the values passed down through generations, and the opportunities available today. The minister stressed that elderly citizens remain valued, respected, and appreciated for their role in national development.

The minister also reaffirmed the government’s commitment to supporting older citizens and ensuring they can age with dignity. He said society should be judged by how it treats and honors its elders. Turner added that centenarians serve as storytellers, teachers, and guardians of the nation’s collective memory. He encouraged residents to celebrate not only those who have reached 100 years of age but also all elderly citizens throughout the year. Thanking centenarians for their endurance and example, Turner described them as national treasures whose journeys continue to inspire the nation and light the way for future generations.
