King Charles Acknowledges Caribbean’s Painful Past
King Charles has arrived in The Bahamas as he begins a nine-day visit to the Caribbean, marking his first trip to the region as monarch.
At his first official engagement, the King addressed young people at a rally, saying it was important to recognise the suffering and injustices of the past.
His visit comes amid ongoing discussions about Britain’s colonial history and the legacy of the transatlantic slave trade. Buckingham Palace indicated before the tour that the King would address this history, but he would not apologise for Britain’s role or offer reparations, in line with the UK government’s position.
