ABWU Backs Lupus Awareness Push With New Partnership

ABWU

ABWU has launched a new partnership with the Lupus Association of Antigua and Barbuda. Moreover, the union pledged support through a new awareness initiative.

The partnership started with a EC$2,500 donation. In addition, the contribution was presented during POP Day on Friday.

POP Day, also known as Put on Purple Day, raises awareness about lupus. The initiative also highlights the impact of the disease on families and communities.

General Secretary David Massiah said the partnership goes beyond financial support. Instead, he described it as a commitment built on solidarity and advocacy.

“Today, we are not simply making a presentation,” Massiah said. “We are making a commitment rooted in solidarity.”

Furthermore, Massiah said many workers across Antigua and Barbuda live with lupus daily. At the same time, they continue working and caring for their families.

He added that the Antigua and Barbuda Workers’ Union proudly supports the Lupus Association. As a result, the partnership aims to strengthen awareness and public understanding.

Massiah also noted that lupus remains widely misunderstood. In many cases, symptoms are not immediately visible. However, the disease can create physical, emotional, mental, and financial struggles.

Meanwhile, Lupus Association President Linda Mussington welcomed the partnership. She also expressed hope that the collaboration will expand the group’s outreach efforts.

“With the Antigua Workers’ Union, I know that the exposure is going to really take us further,” Mussington said.

She further explained that many young people in Antigua are living with lupus. Therefore, she believes the partnership can help increase awareness among younger groups.

Additionally, Assistant Secretary Stacey Ladoo thanked the union for its contribution. She also praised ABWU for supporting workers and communities over many years.

The union is currently celebrating its 59th anniversary. Therefore, officials said the new initiative reflects ABWU’s continued commitment to community support.

Overall, both organizations expect the partnership to improve education and awareness about lupus. They also hope it encourages stronger support for people living with the disease across Antigua and Barbuda.
