Sir Rodney Praises Roads and Housing Growth
Sir Rodney Williams says road and housing projects continued despite cement shortages. The Governor General highlighted major progress within the Ministry of Works.
He said road conditions across Antigua have improved in recent years. Several highways have recently received repairs and upgrades.
These include the Sir George Walter Highway and Friars Hill Roadway. Crews also upgraded the Sir Sidney Walling Highway.
In addition, workers repaired Valley Road from Golden Grove to Old Road. The Parham to Willikies Highway also received improvements.
Meanwhile, All Saints Road is undergoing major renewal works. Secondary roads in villages and communities are also being paved.
A consortium of banks approved EC$150 million for road projects. The funding comes through a small yearly vehicle user fee.
The government praised Minister of Works Maria Browne for her leadership. Officials credited her management and commitment to development.
Sir Rodney described Browne as energetic, determined, and highly competent. He also noted she became the first female Minister of Works.
The statement also recognised the Director of Works and the ministry staff. Officials praised the quality of work delivered nationwide.
However, cement shortages created challenges for ongoing projects. Despite this, the government continued infrastructure works.
Officials expect the shortage to end soon. Dredging near the silos at Crabbes is almost complete.
The government also reassigned Senator Shenella Govia to the Ministry of Works. Officials expect her to strengthen the ministry team further.
Meanwhile, the statement highlighted the government’s housing programme. Officials described it as a major achievement during their 12 years in office.
The National Housing and Urban Development Company and CHAPA built more than 2,000 homes. Private contractors also added many new houses.
Officials stated that housing demand continues to increase across the country. The government expects additional projects in the coming months.
Overall, officials say infrastructure and housing development remain national priorities. They also believe that ongoing projects will continue to improve communities nationwide.
