Report unpaid teacher back pay, union urges members
Report unpaid back pay now, the Antigua and Barbuda Union of Teachers urges members. Teachers still wait for retroactive payments, the union says.
Claims spread on social media. Some posts said all teachers already received payment. However, the union rejected those claims.
Union President Casroy Charles addressed the issue. He issued a communiqué on Friday. He aimed to reduce concern among teachers.
An investigation followed. It showed the social media claims were false. As a result, confusion increased among teachers.
Some teachers received payments already. Others still await theirs. The large size of the teaching service explains delays.
“The teaching service is in excess of 1,000 employees,” Charles said. Therefore, some cases may be missed during processing.
Another issue emerged. Some teachers received partial payments in earlier rounds. These occurred in 2022, 2024, and 2025.
Officials now verify those accounts again. This ensures correct final amounts before settlement.
Verification remains important. It confirms who still needs payment. It also fixes earlier discrepancies.
Meanwhile, the government promised full arrears payment. The Treasury Department set a deadline for the end of April.
Electronic Funds Transfer handles all payments. Several ministries received funds on April 2. Another batch followed on April 10.
The Treasury confirmed no taxes apply. Teachers will receive full retroactive amounts.
The payments cover 2018 to 2023. Salary agreements between government and unions created them. Eligible workers include current and former employees.
Eligibility also covers workers hired before December 31, 2023. It also includes former staff who left before December 31, 2025, under conditions.
Charles urged quick action from teachers. He advised contacting the union if payment does not arrive by month’s end. This will speed up intervention.
“If that’s not the case, notify the union,” he said. That step allows immediate support.
Former public servants also fall under the plan. Those who left before December 2022 must submit details. They should contact the Treasury Help Desk for assistance.
