PM Blasts UPP $3,600 Power Cut Plan

PM

PM Gaston Browne has strongly criticized a UPP plan to cut electricity bills. He warned it could hurt APUA.

Speaking on Pointe FM, Browne questioned the proposal’s cost. He said cutting $3,600 per household is expensive. Therefore, he urged careful review.

Moreover, Browne said the plan lacks funding details. He argued the opposition has not explained how to pay for it. As a result, concerns are growing.

He stressed the scale of the proposal. Millions of dollars would be required. So, he said the numbers do not add up.

At the same time, Browne highlighted APUA’s financial position. He said the utility already faces pressure. In fact, it depends on government support.

Furthermore, he outlined current subsidies. The government funds infrastructure upgrades. It also helps offset rising fuel costs.

In addition, Browne noted diesel subsidies. The government pays about $3 per gallon. This helps keep electricity prices stable.

However, challenges remain. APUA still uses costly diesel fuel. This follows delays in moving to LNG. Consequently, expenses remain high.

Browne said the utility is also investing heavily. These include water production and infrastructure projects. Therefore, costs continue to rise.

He warned of serious risks. Removing revenue without replacement funding could harm APUA. It could also affect workers.

Importantly, APUA employs over 800 people. Browne asked if job cuts would follow. He raised this as a key concern.

Meanwhile, he questioned the opposition directly. He asked where the money would come from. He said voters deserve clear answers.

Browne also defended his record. He said APUA was near bankruptcy in 2014. Since then, he said it has improved.

Now, he claims the utility earns millions each year. This, he argued, shows responsible management. Therefore, he rejected the UPP plan.

In conclusion, Browne called the proposal unrealistic. He said it may sound appealing. However, he argued it is not sustainable.

So far, the opposition has not responded publicly.
