Ministry Confirms Contained Chickenpox Cluster

Ministry

Ministry of Health officials confirmed a contained chickenpox cluster at Clarevue Psychiatric Hospital. The cases were identified in two male wards.

The Ministry of Health, Wellness, Environment, and Civil Service Affairs addressed the issue publicly. Officials said the situation remains limited to the affected wards.

In response, health teams quickly introduced public health safety measures. These actions aim to protect patients and staff.

Officials activated infection prevention and control procedures immediately after identifying the cases. They also began active surveillance and monitoring efforts.

In addition, health teams introduced quarantine and isolation measures. Workers also increased environmental cleaning and disinfection across affected areas.

Authorities restricted unnecessary movement within impacted wards. They also continued clinical assessments of patients and staff members.

Public health officials remain in close contact with Clarevue Psychiatric Hospital management. Clinical teams also continue monitoring the situation carefully.

At present, officials report no widespread transmission outside the affected wards. The Ministry says containment efforts remain effective.

Varicella, commonly called chickenpox, is a highly contagious viral illness. The varicella-zoster virus causes the disease.

Symptoms often include fever, fatigue, and an itchy blister-like rash. The virus mainly spreads through respiratory droplets or direct skin contact.

Exposure to shingles may also spread varicella to susceptible individuals. Shingles results from reactivation of the same virus.

Officials explained that clusters sometimes occur in congregate settings. Close contact can increase transmission risk in shared environments.

However, the Ministry noted that chickenpox is generally mild, especially in children. Officials still encourage early treatment and prevention.

The Ministry also reminded the public about the importance of vaccination. Officials described vaccination as one of the most effective prevention methods.

The varicella vaccine remains available through public health clinics across Antigua and Barbuda. Both adults and children can receive the vaccine.

Parents and guardians are encouraged to follow the national immunization schedule. Officials also advise people unsure of their vaccine status to contact healthcare providers.

Meanwhile, the Ministry continues promoting infection prevention practices. These include handwashing, covering coughs, and avoiding close contact with sick individuals.

Officials also advise infected persons to stay away from public settings until lesions crust over. Anyone with fever and rash symptoms should seek medical advice quickly.

The Ministry says active surveillance continues. Officials will provide updates if new public health concerns emerge.
