UK Heatwave Breaks June Temperature Record
The United Kingdom (UK) has recorded its highest June temperature for the third consecutive day, according to the Met Office. The extreme heatwave has pushed temperatures to record levels, strained public services, and disrupted daily life across parts of England.
A provisional temperature of 37.3C was recorded in Santon Downham, Suffolk. This broke the earlier record of 36.9C set just a day before. The Met Office confirmed that the long-standing June record of 35.6C from 1976 has now been surpassed on three straight days. Officials described the current heatwave as the peak of the event in terms of temperature intensity.
The Met Office issued its highest-level red “extreme heat” warning, which remained in place for three consecutive days. Authorities warned of widespread health risks and increased pressure on hospitals, schools, and emergency services. Climate experts also noted that the UK is increasingly exposed to more frequent and intense heatwaves linked to climate change.
Public services faced major disruption. The London Ambulance Service reported a surge in life-threatening emergency calls, forcing some staff who do not usually work frontline roles to return to emergency duties. Hospitals also reported strain on systems, with some equipment failures linked to high temperatures.
Transport and tourism were also affected. Some London attractions, including Tower Bridge and the Royal Observatory in Greenwich, closed temporarily. The British Museum reduced hours and warned of possible further closures. Hundreds of schools either closed or partially closed due to unsafe conditions for students and staff.
Businesses also suffered losses as foot traffic dropped in busy areas. Street vendors reported difficult working conditions, with temperatures inside stalls rising well above outdoor levels. Electricity operators also warned of tight supply margins during peak demand hours.
Fire services contained a wildfire in northern England that had broken out earlier in the week, highlighting the wider environmental risks linked to the extreme heat. Authorities continue to urge the public to take precautions as the heatwave persists.
