Regional search for missing aircraft continues

Regional

Regional aviation authorities continued search-and-rescue operations on Sunday for a small aircraft that disappeared while travelling from St Vincent and the Grenadines to Tobago.

The Dominican Republic-registered Beech 58P Pressurised Baron aircraft, registration HI-1145, departed Argyle International Airport in St Vincent at 11:52 a.m. on Friday. It was scheduled to arrive at ANR Robinson International Airport in Tobago later that day.

Authorities said air traffic controllers lost contact with the aircraft while it was flying over the southern Caribbean Sea. The loss of communication triggered a regional search involving aviation and emergency officials from several Caribbean territories.

Flight tracking data showed the aircraft was operating under visual flight rules at an altitude of about 4,025 feet and travelling at approximately 142 knots before its signal disappeared. Its last known position was recorded over the southern Caribbean Sea near Grenadian or Venezuelan territorial waters.

Officials have not disclosed how many people were on board and have not released the identities of the pilot or any passengers. The Beech Baron aircraft can carry a pilot and up to five passengers.

As of Sunday, authorities had not confirmed that the aircraft had crashed, and search teams had not located any wreckage. Sources familiar with the investigation said air traffic controllers at Argyle International Airport alerted Piarco Air Traffic Control in Trinidad and Tobago after communication with the aircraft was lost.

A source at Piarco confirmed that regional aviation authorities remain actively engaged in the search. Flight records indicate the aircraft had completed several flights in the days before its disappearance without incident and regularly operated routes between Grenada and Trinidad and Tobago.

The incident is the second unresolved aircraft disappearance linked to the area in recent years. Another aircraft vanished after operating along the Canouan–St Vincent route in December 2023, and that case remains unsolved.

Authorities across the region say search efforts remain ongoing as they continue looking for the aircraft and its occupants.
