Scientists call for increased disaster readiness

The Seismic Research Centre (SRC) of the University of the West Indies has urged Caribbean countries to remain alert and prepared following a series of significant earthquakes in Venezuela.

The centre noted that while no major regional damage has been reported, seismic activity in the area serves as a reminder of the Caribbean’s exposure to earthquake risks. Officials stressed the importance of maintaining strong preparedness systems, including public awareness, emergency planning, and early warning readiness.

Experts say the region’s geological setting makes it vulnerable to seismic events, and continued monitoring is essential to ensure timely response and risk reduction. The SRC continues to track activity closely and provide updates to regional authorities.

The advisory reinforces ongoing calls for disaster preparedness across the Caribbean as part of broader efforts to strengthen resilience against natural hazards.
