Attorney Warren Cassell highlights multiple Human Rights Violations at State Prison

A local attorney- Warren Cassell, has raised concerns about conditions at Antigua and Barbuda’s prison, warning that aspects of the facility may not meet internationally accepted standards.

Speaking on Observer AM, he highlighted issues related to inmate welfare and detention conditions, arguing that improvements are needed to ensure the rights and dignity of those in custody are protected. He explained that United Nations reports show the prison population has climbed from 191 inmates in 2004 to over 340, more than double the facility’s original capacity of 150. He warned that these conditions violate the UN Convention Against Torture.

The concerns have reignited discussions about prison reform, infrastructure upgrades, and the need to address longstanding challenges within the correctional system.

Calls have been made for authorities to review the situation and consider measures that would bring prison conditions more in line with international best practices.
