Governor General Urges Senators to Lead With Integrity
Governor General Sir Rodney Williams urged newly appointed senators to take their duties seriously during today’s swearing-in ceremony at Government House.
He reminded members of the Upper House that their role goes far beyond ceremony and rubber-stamping. Instead, he said senators must help strengthen Antigua and Barbuda’s democracy through careful debate and responsible legislative review.
Speaking at the ceremony, Sir Rodney described the Senate as a vital part of the country’s constitutional framework. Therefore, he said senators must bring value, insight and balance to national discussions.
“The Senate is expected to contribute thoughtful examination, balanced judgment, and expert insight,” Sir Rodney told the gathering.
He also stressed the importance of reviewing legislation carefully. According to the Governor General, senators must ensure proposed laws serve the national interest.
In addition, Sir Rodney warned lawmakers against focusing only on immediate concerns. He said strong legislation must also prepare the country for future realities and changing circumstances.
“Laws must be capable of embracing multiple scenarios,” he said during the address.
Furthermore, he urged senators to create laws that remain practical and sustainable for future generations. As a result, he said careful planning and thoughtful discussion remain essential in Parliament.
Sir Rodney also reminded senators of the serious responsibility attached to public office. Their decisions, he noted, will shape the legal and social framework of the country.
Consequently, those laws will affect how people live, work, invest and raise families across Antigua and Barbuda.
As the senators prepare to begin formal parliamentary duties, Sir Rodney encouraged humility and diligence. At the same time, he called for respect toward differing opinions during debates and discussions.
Moreover, he urged lawmakers to remain committed to the welfare of the people of Antigua and Barbuda. According to Sir Rodney, strong democracy depends on respectful and meaningful dialogue.
The Governor General also acknowledged the personal sacrifices linked to public service. Therefore, he thanked the families and loved ones supporting the senators in their new responsibilities.
He ended the ceremony with a message of unity and hope. Sir Rodney said he hopes wisdom will guide the Senate’s deliberations in the years ahead.
Finally, he expressed confidence that mutual respect would continue strengthening democracy in Antigua and Barbuda through the work of the Upper House.
