Antiguan duo begins US fellowship journey

Antiguan

Antiguan entrepreneurs Joshuanette Francis and Canice James have started key fellowship placements in the United States. Notably, they represent the nation in the 2026 Young Leaders of the Americas Initiative.

First, they completed an intense orientation in Texas. Then, they moved into placements in Washington, DC, and California. The program includes over 200 young leaders from across the Caribbean and Latin America.

Now, Francis works in Washington, DC. She is placed at a university center focused on leadership and community engagement. There, she studies volunteer systems and engagement models. As a result, she aims to strengthen the “Good Humans 268” program in Antigua.

Meanwhile, James is based in San Francisco. He works with Hara Hub and a software development firm. Together, they improve digital platforms and business automation. In addition, he sharpens his own technical and business skills.

During the first week, both participants faced a demanding schedule. For example, they attended sessions, meetings, and networking events daily. However, they described the experience as rewarding.

Importantly, Francis highlighted a powerful lesson. A keynote speaker shared she pitched her business 857 times before success. Therefore, Francis now embraces persistence as a guiding principle.

Moreover, she continues to advocate for waste management reform in Antigua. She believes consistent pitching and strong storytelling are essential. Even so, she says the experience already feels valuable.

At the same time, James focuses on improving systems and expanding his network. He explained that the fellowship strengthens both his technical knowledge and business approach. Consequently, he expects long-term benefits.

Back home, Francis leads a community-focused organization. It connects projects like reforestation and recycling. In particular, these efforts create jobs for people with disabilities.

Furthermore, she stressed the importance of financial independence. While donations help, sustainable income matters more. Therefore, she plans to build strong frameworks during the fellowship.

With support from her team, she aims to drive national change. Ultimately, both fellows hope to bring lasting impact to Antigua.
