Trinidad PM Says Plot to Kill Her Has Expanded

Trinidad PM Kamla Persad-Bissessar says the investigation into an alleged plot to kill her and senior members of her government has grown significantly. She said the case now involves multiple foreign intelligence and investigative agencies working alongside local authorities.

The PM told the Trinidad Guardian that she could not discuss specific details because the investigation remains active. However, she confirmed that investigators have expanded the probe beyond its original scope. Authorities are now following new leads across several countries.

Persad-Bissessar said officials have identified new people, financial institutions, and businesses during the investigation. She added that local and foreign authorities expect the case to take time because of its increasing complexity.

The PM said the investigation now stretches across multiple jurisdictions. She noted that several foreign agencies are assisting with the inquiries but did not identify the countries or organizations involved.

The latest update comes after Homeland Security Minister Roger Alexander revoked the Preventive Detention Orders issued against businessman Dominic Hadeed and his wife, Genevieve Hadeed. The couple was arrested on June 24 during a Trinidad and Tobago Police Service (TTPS) investigation into the alleged conspiracy to assassinate Persad-Bissessar and Attorney General John Jeremie.

Alexander said he revoked the detention orders after reviewing legal, medical, and constitutional issues. He also considered recommendations from the Constitution Review Tribunal. He said keeping the couple in detention was no longer proportionate under the circumstances.

Authorities have not charged Dominic or Genevieve Hadeed with any criminal offence. However, investigators continue to examine the alleged conspiracy.

Persad-Bissessar said law enforcement agencies must be allowed to complete their work without interference. She stressed that investigators are carefully reviewing every lead as they work with international partners.

Officials have not said when the investigation will end. The PM said the expanding nature of the case means the process will take time. She urged the public to allow investigators to complete their work as authorities continue examining the alleged plot.
