Woman Dies in Dominican Resort Fire

A woman was killed, and nearly 1,700 tourists were evacuated after a major fire broke out at a beach resort in the Dominican Republic.

Authorities identified the victim as 46-year-old Italian national Francesca Valentino. She died in the fire at the Viva Wyndham Dominicus Beach Hotel in the popular resort area of Bayahibe.

Emergency officials said three people were taken to medical facilities for treatment, while six others received medical attention at the scene. Those affected included hotel guests, visitors and emergency responders.

Videos shared by local media showed thick smoke rising above the coastline as flames spread through parts of the resort. Officials said the fire moved quickly because sections of the hotel’s roof were made from palm materials. Windy conditions also helped the flames spread.

Emergency crews responded to the scene and later brought the fire under control. Authorities have launched an investigation to determine the cause of the blaze.

Hotel guests were evacuated and moved to nearby accommodations. Officials said the nearby Viva Wyndham Dominicus Palace, which is part of the same hotel chain, was not damaged by the fire.

The country’s Emergency Operations Center said tourist activities in Bayahibe and surrounding areas continue as normal. Officials stressed that visitors can still safely enjoy attractions in the region.

Bayahibe is one of the Dominican Republic’s most popular tourist destinations. The country remains the leading tourism market in the Caribbean and welcomed about 5.6 million visitors during the first five months of this year.

Authorities continue to assess the damage and investigate the circumstances surrounding the deadly fire.
