Barbados Mourns Sir Garfield Sobers
Barbados is mourning the death of cricket legend Sir Garfield Sobers. Prime Minister Mia Mottley has declared July 17 a national day of mourning in his honour.
The Prime Minister also announced that another day of mourning will take place on the day of Sobers’ interment. During these periods, flags across Barbados will fly at half-mast. The government will also suspend official functions.
In a video statement, Mottley paid tribute to Sobers as one of Barbados’ greatest sons. She said the country remembers him with gratitude, respect, and sadness.
Mottley reflected on Sobers’ journey from Bayland to the world stage. She said he carried Barbados, the West Indies, and the Caribbean with pride throughout his career.
Sobers became one of cricket’s greatest players. Fans and experts remember him as one of the finest all-rounders the sport has ever seen. His performances with both bat and ball made him a global cricket icon.
The Prime Minister said Sobers’ legacy goes beyond his records. She explained that he became a symbol of excellence and inspired generations across the Caribbean and around the world.
Mottley also remembered the moment Sobers received his knighthood from Queen Elizabeth. She said the people of Barbados had already honoured him in their hearts long before that achievement.
She offered condolences to Sobers’ children, stepchildren, family, and loved ones. Mottley said his life represented a remarkable journey that brought pride to Barbados and the wider Caribbean.
Sir Garfield Sobers, who would have turned 90 on July 28, leaves behind a lasting legacy in cricket. Barbados, the West Indies, and fans around the world continue to celebrate his achievements and contributions to the sport.
