BREAKING Browne extends tariff suspension on basic goods

BREAKING

BREAKING Browne extends the suspension of the Common External Tariff on selected basic goods indefinitely. The move aims to ease cost of living pressures.

First, Prime Minister Gaston Browne confirmed the decision during a “Get to Know Your Candidates” interview. He stressed continued relief for households.

Importantly, the suspension keeps prices lower on selected basic goods. Officials estimate about a 40 percent reduction on certain items.

Meanwhile, the Government had already approved a one-year suspension. That earlier measure applied to essential food items.

Specifically, the initial policy followed a regional decision by CARICOM. It came from the Council for Trade and Economic Development.

As a result, zero duty applied to selected staples from July 1, 2025. That arrangement was set to end on June 30, 2026.

However, Browne now confirmed the measure will continue indefinitely. He said the relief will not simply expire.

Furthermore, he emphasized that people’s welfare remains the top priority. He said the Government will act in the public interest.

In addition, he stated the policy will continue regardless of external approval. He referenced CARICOM in his remarks.

“With or without permission,” he said, “our people’s interest comes first.”

Therefore, the Government will maintain price relief on essential goods. This aims to reduce pressure from global food costs.

Meanwhile, the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party welcomed the announcement. The party described it as decisive leadership.

Additionally, the ABLP said the measure reflects a people-first approach. It praised the Government’s focus on households.

Moreover, the party said the policy helps protect purchasing power. It also supports economic stability.

Consequently, officials expect continued relief for consumers. Families will benefit from lower costs on basic items.

Finally, the ABLP expressed confidence in the long-term impact. It said the measure supports affordability and national progress.

Overall, the Government confirmed its commitment to maintaining the suspension. It aims to shield citizens from rising global prices.
