Antigua and Barbuda is moving forward with plans to expand Spanish instruction across the country’s schools through a proposed three-year programme.

The plan could require between 18 and 20 additional Spanish teachers to support full implementation. The staffing estimate forms part of recommendations in the Education Sector Implementation Plan 2026-2030, which Education Minister Daryll Matthew presented to Cabinet.

Director General of Communications Maurice Merchant said officials have recommended preparing a national staffing proposal to address the expected demand for more teachers. He explained that the programme would roll out over three years, with the pace depending on school readiness and how students progress through the education system.

Spanish is already taught in schools, but the proposed policy aims to create a more consistent national approach. The government wants to strengthen existing Spanish lessons and establish a programme that provides equal access for students across the country.

The proposal also recommends aligning the Spanish curriculum with international language proficiency standards. Officials believe this would help improve the quality of instruction and provide students with stronger language skills.

While Spanish expansion is a key part of the plan, French will remain included in the country’s modern language programme. Merchant said the policy would strengthen Spanish instruction while also protecting and maintaining French education in schools.

The Ministry of Education is also looking to work with international partners, including Spain and the Dominican Republic. Support from these countries could help with teacher training, curriculum development and the wider implementation of the programme.

Cabinet has begun reviewing the policy proposal but has not yet announced a final decision on approval.

If approved, the initiative would represent a major expansion of language education in Antigua and Barbuda. Officials say the goal is to create a stronger and more organized system that prepares students with additional language skills for future opportunities.
