PM Browne Calls for Urgent MVI Action
Prime Minister Gaston Browne is calling for the urgent implementation of the Multidimensional Vulnerability Index (MVI), arguing that it is critical for small island developing states facing growing economic and climate-related challenges.
Speaking on the issue, Browne stressed that traditional measures such as Gross National Income often fail to capture the unique vulnerabilities of small nations, leaving them at a disadvantage when seeking access to concessional financing and development support.
The MVI is designed to assess countries based on a wider range of factors, including exposure to natural disasters, economic shocks, and climate risks. Advocates believe the framework would provide a more accurate picture of a country’s development needs and resilience challenges.
Browne urged the international community to move from discussion to action, emphasizing that vulnerable countries require fairer access to funding and resources to strengthen their economies and adapt to the impacts of climate change.
