Antigua & Barbuda sets lobster and parrotfish closed season 2026
Antigua & Barbuda has announced a closed season for lobster and parrotfish starting May 1, 2026. Officials say this step protects marine life and supports sustainability.
Meanwhile, the Antigua & Barbuda Defence Force is working with the Fisheries Division. Together, they will enforce national fisheries rules across the country.
In addition, the closure begins on May 1, 2026. It covers spiny lobster and chub or parrotfish. Therefore, fishing for these species must stop during the set periods.
Furthermore, the rules are strict. No catching is allowed. Also, no selling is allowed. In addition, no buying is allowed. Finally, no possession is allowed.
These restrictions apply to everyone. For example, individuals must comply. Likewise, restaurants must comply. Similarly, vendors and exporters must follow the rules.
The closed season runs on different timelines. For instance, spiny lobster closes from May 1 to June 30, 2026. Meanwhile, parrotfish closes from May 1 to July 31, 2026.
At the same time, enforcement will increase nationwide. The ABDF and Fisheries Division will carry out checks. They will inspect ports, markets, restaurants, and coastal areas.
Moreover, authorities warn about penalties. Fines may reach $50,000 XCD. In addition, officials may confiscate illegal catch. They may also take legal action.
The main goal is conservation. Specifically, spiny lobster needs protection during breeding. As a result, future stocks can recover.
Similarly, parrotfish are important for reef health. They control algae on coral reefs. Therefore, they help maintain balance in marine ecosystems.
Because of this, the closure supports marine biodiversity. It also protects fishing livelihoods. Many communities depend on these resources.
Still, officials urge full compliance. Fishermen must follow the rules. Vendors must also follow them. Likewise, businesses must comply.
Overall, the government stresses sustainability. It aims to protect marine resources for future generations. Consequently, cooperation remains essential.
