The US. government has declared a drought disaster in 26 municipalities across Puerto Rico.

The move comes as dry conditions continue to affect farmers, crops and water supplies. More than one-third of Puerto Rico is under extreme drought. Another 30% faces severe drought.

July was the driest month on record for San Juan in more than 120 years. It was also the capital’s second hottest July.

The disaster declaration allows affected farmers and agricultural producers to apply for emergency loans. Puerto Rico’s Agriculture Department has urged farmers to document their losses.

Many farmers have already reported major damage. Crops are drying up, while fruits are falling from trees before they can ripen.

Some farmers have reduced or stopped production because of the drought. Livestock farmers also face problems because they do not have enough water and feed for their animals.

The drought has also worsened Puerto Rico’s water crisis. Authorities have introduced water rationing in parts of San Juan and six other cities.

More than 180,000 customers lose access to water for up to 48 hours at a time. The restrictions follow a rotating schedule.

Puerto Rico’s government declared a state of emergency in late July. It also activated the National Guard to help transport, distribute and purify water.

Meteorologists have linked the dry conditions to El Niño. The weather pattern has also affected the neighbouring U.S. Virgin Islands.

Puerto Rico also faces long-standing problems with its water infrastructure. Some communities experienced shortages and changes in water pressure even before the drought worsened.

The drought continues to put pressure on farmers, residents and water services across the territory.
