PM Warns MPs Against “Slothfulness” After Win

PM

PM Gaston Browne told government MPs that their election victory is “not a mandate for slothfulness” as Parliament opened its new term on Monday. Moreover, he urged lawmakers to work harder and stay focused on serving the people of Antigua and Barbuda.

Browne made the comments during the first sitting of the new Parliament at the Parliament Building. Additionally, members officially took their oaths during the ceremony.

“But as I would have said on several occasions, the victory is not a mandate for slothfulness,” Browne said. “If anything, it is actually a mandate for us to serve more faithfully the people of Antigua and Barbuda.”

He also reminded MPs that Parliament remains the country’s highest decision-making body. Therefore, he said lawmakers must attend sittings regularly and carry out their duties seriously.

“We do not want individuals who will come to Parliament when they feel like,” Browne said.

Furthermore, he explained that members should only miss sittings because of illness, official travel, or serious personal matters.

Browne also told MPs they have a responsibility to represent their constituents with dignity and professionalism. In addition, he encouraged lawmakers to work together as the government begins another term in office.

Earlier in his address, Browne congratulated Osbert Frederick on his return as Speaker of the House. He also congratulated Philmore Benjamin after he was elected Deputy Speaker.

“The Parliament remains a sacred chamber of responsibility of our democracy,” Browne said.

Meanwhile, he urged both men to protect the dignity and order of the House. He added that Parliament must never “descend into chaos.”

Browne also praised Frederick for being “fair and firm” during his previous tenure as Speaker. As a result, he said the government expects the same leadership moving forward.

Toward the end of his speech, Browne called for unity among lawmakers. He said the government must continue working together to advance Antigua and Barbuda.

Finally, Browne congratulated all elected members. He also recognized veteran MP Stedroy Benjamin, who took the parliamentary oath for the eighth straight time.y Benjamin, who took the parliamentary oath for the eighth consecutive time.
