Minister Joseph Leads Barbuda Health Review
Minister of Health, Wellness, Environment, and Civil Service Affairs Michael Joseph recently led a high-level delegation to Barbuda to assess healthcare services and public health infrastructure.
The visit forms part of the government’s wider effort to strengthen healthcare delivery across Antigua and Barbuda. Officials said the initiative also ensures Barbuda’s healthcare needs remain a national priority.
Moreover, Minister Joseph announced that a full three-month assessment of the health sector will take place before any major implementation measures begin. He explained that the review will help officials create a more strategic and inclusive healthcare framework.
During the visit, the delegation toured Hanna Thomas Hospital, the Barbuda Health and Wellness Centre, and the island’s dental department. In addition, officials met with healthcare workers to discuss operations, challenges, and possible improvements.
The Minister stressed that Barbuda remains an important part of the country’s long-term healthcare strategy. Therefore, the government plans to include the island fully in future health sector development.
Meanwhile, the delegation also discussed strengthening emergency response services in Barbuda. This included talks about provisions for an ambulance on the island.
In addition to healthcare facilities, the delegation visited the Barbuda landfill site. Officials said the visit supports the Ministry’s continued focus on environmental health, sanitation, and public wellness.
Several senior officials joined the assessment visit. The delegation included Permanent Secretary Stacey Gregg-Paige, Senator Kendra Beazer, Health Committee Chairman Devon Warner, and Deputy Chairman Wayde Burton.
Also present were Secretary and CEO O. Shari Cannegieter, Head of the Health Department Karie Williams-Cephas, Resident Doctor Jeremy Deazle, and Public Health Nurse Jenita Cuffy.
Furthermore, the Ministry said the assessment will allow officials to identify areas needing improvement while strengthening healthcare planning across the country.
The government continues focusing on equitable healthcare access for all residents. Officials also hope the review will improve healthcare quality and public health systems in Barbuda over the long term.
Overall, the visit highlighted the government’s ongoing commitment to building a stronger and more inclusive healthcare sector for both Antigua and Barbuda.
