Over 69,000 pensioners across Guyana now benefit from government electricity and water subsidy programmes. The government introduced these initiatives to help senior citizens manage utility expenses. As a result, thousands of households receive direct support with their monthly bills.

Official figures show that 33,274 pensioners have benefited from the $30,000 electricity subsidy through Guyana Power and Light Inc. (GPL) as of June 2026. Eligible pensioners must first register in their own name. After registration, GPL applies the subsidy directly to their accounts.

Additionally, the government expects pensioners to see the electricity subsidy reflected on their bills from June 2026. Pensioners who do not see the credit can visit their nearest GPL office for assistance. Therefore, officials encourage recipients to review their bills regularly and confirm that the subsidy appears correctly.

Meanwhile, the water subsidy programme continues to assist thousands of pensioners throughout the country. Guyana Water Incorporated (GWI) manages the programme. The latest figures, recorded in March 2026, show that 36,586 pensioners received support through the initiative.

Over 36,000 pensioners now benefit from the water subsidy programme. Furthermore, the initiative helps reduce utility costs for senior citizens and provides additional financial relief. The government continues to monitor the programme as beneficiaries receive support.

Minister of Human Services and Social Security, Vindhya Persaud, urged pensioners to check both their electricity and water bills. She encouraged them to ensure they receive the correct subsidies. She also noted that the programmes provide direct relief to households across Guyana.

Furthermore, the government views these subsidies as an important part of its social protection efforts. Officials said the programmes help lower utility expenses for senior citizens. They also aim to improve living standards for pensioners nationwide.
