Antigua and Barbuda Strengthens Ebola Border Measures
Antigua and Barbuda strengthens Ebola preparedness and border surveillance measures. The Ministry of Health continues to monitor Ebola Virus Disease cases in Central and East Africa.
This follows a World Health Organization declaration of a Public Health Emergency of International Concern. The alert links to outbreaks in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and Uganda.
At present, the country reports no suspected or confirmed Ebola cases. However, officials say strong preparedness remains important.
The Ministry has increased national surveillance and response systems. These steps follow international public health guidance.
Authorities have strengthened monitoring at all ports of entry. They also reinforced infection prevention and control in health facilities.
In addition, officials continue working with regional and global health agencies. This helps improve coordination and response speed.
The Ministry is also reviewing Ebola preparedness protocols developed in 2014. Updates include surveillance, infection control, case management, and safe handling procedures.
Meanwhile, the Infectious Disease Centre is being prepared for isolation cases. This ensures readiness if specialised care becomes necessary.
The Ministry will propose temporary travel restrictions to Cabinet. These measures target travellers from designated outbreak zones.
The proposal includes restricting entry for persons who visited outbreak areas within 45 days before arrival. This reduces importation risk.
Officials are reinstalling infrared thermal cameras at V.C. Bird International Airport. These systems will improve passenger screening.
In addition, Port Health teams are being strengthened at the airport. This comes ahead of new flights from Nigeria starting 25 May 2026.
Authorities are increasing traveller screening and assessment procedures. They are also coordinating with Immigration, Customs, airport teams, and airlines.
Despite these steps, officials say the public health risk remains low. However, they continue to stress vigilance and readiness.
The Ministry urges the public to maintain good hand hygiene. It also advises people to seek medical care if they develop fever after travel.
Finally, officials say monitoring will continue. Updates will be shared as the situation develops.
