Three deaths have been linked to a Legionnaires’ disease outbreak on New York City’s Upper East Side. Health officials continue to track the outbreak and urge residents to watch for symptoms.

The New York City Health Department said three deaths have been confirmed. Officials have also recorded 74 cases of the disease. Eight people remain in the hospital, while 51 patients have recovered enough to go home. Health Commissioner Dr. Alister F. Martin expressed sympathy to the families who lost loved ones.

Health officials traced the outbreak to Legionella bacteria in cooling towers. Tests found the bacteria in cooling towers at 76 buildings across the Upper East Side. The city ordered every property owner to drain, clean and disinfect the affected systems. Officials later confirmed that all 76 buildings completed the required work.

The city has already seen fewer new illnesses since July 8. Officials say the clean-up efforts have likely reduced the spread of the bacteria. However, they continue to monitor the situation closely. They also encourage anyone who recently visited the area to watch for symptoms.

Health officials stressed that drinking water, showers, and household air conditioners did not cause this outbreak. Instead, people likely inhaled tiny water droplets that carried Legionella bacteria from contaminated cooling towers. Hot tubs, spas, fountains, and some plumbing systems can also support the growth of the bacteria.

New York reports hundreds of Legionnaires’ disease cases each year. This outbreak, however, has affected three nearby ZIP codes. They include 10128, 10028, and 10075. Officials advise anyone who visited those areas during the past two weeks to monitor their health. Symptoms include fever, chills, fatigue, headaches, low appetite, confusion, and diarrhea.

Doctors can treat Legionnaires’ disease with antibiotics. Early treatment often improves recovery. The disease does not spread from person to person. Most people exposed to the bacteria never become sick. However, older adults, smokers, people who vape, and those with weakened immune systems face a higher risk of serious illness. People with diabetes or heart, kidney, liver, or lung disease also face a greater risk. Health officials said there is no vaccine or medicine that prevents Legionnaires’ disease.
