Governor General to Deliver Throne Speech May 26
Governor General Sir Rodney Williams will deliver the Throne Speech on May 26 during the ceremonial opening of Parliament in Antigua and Barbuda.
Director General of Communications Maurice Merchant shared the details on Thursday. He spoke during the swearing-in ceremony for Joel Anderson-Rayne and Tiffany Strann-Peters at Government House.
Moreover, Merchant confirmed several important dates for the start of the new parliamentary term after the April 30 general election.
First, the Lower House will meet on Monday, May 18. Members will elect a Speaker and Deputy Speaker during that sitting.
Next, senators will meet on Wednesday, May 20. They will take their oaths and begin Senate business.
Then, Parliament will officially open on Tuesday, May 26. On that day, Sir Rodney Williams will present the government’s plans for the 2026-2027 parliamentary year.
“The 26th, His Excellency will present the government’s plans for 2026-2027 in the speech from the throne,” Merchant said.
The Throne Speech will outline the government’s main goals and policies for the new term. As a result, many people will watch closely for details about upcoming plans and legislation.
Meanwhile, Merchant also confirmed another Senate update. He said Tiffany Strann-Peters completed the government’s team of 11 senators in the Upper House.
