Antigua Targets New Tourism Markets Across Africa and Middle East
New markets strategy
Antigua and Barbuda is expanding its tourism strategy. Tourism Minister Charles Fernandez announced the plan. Moreover, he said the focus now goes beyond traditional markets.
He explained that the country targets Africa, the Middle East, and Latin America. Previously, the US, UK, and Canada dominated tourism arrivals. However, the government now wants wider global reach.
Fernandez spoke during a “Know Your Candidate” interview. This took place ahead of the April 30 general election. In addition, he outlined both tourism and trade goals.
Air links and Emirates talks
Fernandez said the government is discussing flights with Emirates Airlines. These talks aim to improve air connections from Dubai. As a result, new travel routes could open.
“We are engaged with Emirates Airlines,” he said. He added that three weekly flights from Dubai could begin in 2027. Therefore, travel access may expand significantly.
He said the strategy targets high-value visitors. In particular, he pointed to growing wealth in Africa and the Middle East. In addition, Latin America forms part of the plan.
Trade and cargo expansion
Fernandez said the plan goes beyond tourism. It also includes trade links with new regions. Therefore, the strategy supports wider economic growth.
The government also plans airport cargo upgrades. These include new storage and refrigeration facilities. As a result, the airport will handle more goods.
He said officials will expand the cargo area. In addition, the port will receive upgrades. Together, both projects support a hub strategy.
“We are now building a larger cargo area,” he said. This move strengthens Antigua and Barbuda’s role as a regional hub. Consequently, logistics capacity will increase.
Tourism and economic impact
Fernandez said tourism remains the main driver of the economy. Hotels continue to support jobs and income. Meanwhile, short-term rentals are growing.
Travel patterns changed after the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, more locals now earn from tourism. Airbnb-style rentals have increased opportunities.
Diversification plans
Fernandez said diversification protects the economy. It reduces risk from relying on one market. Therefore, the sector becomes more stable.
He also said global tourism competition is rising. However, Antigua and Barbuda plans to stay competitive. Ultimately, the goal focuses on growth and long-term stability.
