UK Husband and 12 Others Face Abuse Trial
A UK husband accused of drugging and sexually abusing his wife for more than two decades is now on trial in Manchester, England. Twelve other men are also facing charges linked to the alleged abuse.
Prosecutors have charged the husband, who is in his 60s, with 48 offenses. The charges date back to 2004. Police have not released his name. They say they are protecting his wife’s privacy.
The husband first denied all 48 charges. He has since pleaded guilty to 15 offenses. These include five counts of rape, six counts of assault by penetration, and three counts of sexual assault. He also admitted to sharing intimate images of his wife without her consent.
However, he still denies 33 charges.
Prosecutors say some of the men went to the couple’s home in Stockport. The town sits about 30 minutes southeast of Manchester. Prosecutors allege that the men went there to carry out sexual offenses against the woman.
The case also involves Karl Lindsay, 55. Lindsay previously served as a football club chief executive. He faces charges of conspiracy to rape, conspiracy to assault by penetration, and conspiracy to administer a substance with intent.
Mohammed Sabir, 28, faces charges of rape, conspiracy to rape, and conspiracy to assault by penetration. Philip Wild, 58, faces charges that include conspiracy to rape, attempted rape, and assault by penetration.

Robert Stewart, 70, also faces rape and conspiracy to rape charges. Sean Peers, 38, and Richard Townsend, 37, face charges of assault by penetration and conspiracy to assault by penetration.
Two other defendants, Daniel Rayner, 42, and David Graves, 59, face several conspiracy charges. These include conspiracy to rape and conspiracy to assault by penetration. They also face charges linked to administering a substance with intent.
Graham Brougham, 73, faces charges of rape, conspiracy to rape, and conspiracy to assault by penetration.
Another man, Keith Fotheringham, 59, has already pleaded guilty to several charges. These include assault by penetration, conspiracy to rape, and conspiracy to administer a substance with intent. He remains in custody and will receive his sentence at a later date.
The court planned to begin the trial on Tuesday. However, unforeseen circumstances delayed the start until Wednesday.
The trial will take place at Minshull Street Crown Court in Manchester. Prosecutors expect the proceedings to last 12 weeks.
