Magnitude 6.5 Quake Shakes Near Antigua
Magnitude 6.5 earthquake activity was recorded northeast of Antigua and Barbuda on Saturday morning, according to the Seismic Research Centre of the University of the West Indies.
The quake occurred at 10:50 a.m. local time. In addition, officials said the earthquake struck at a depth of 31 kilometres.
Preliminary data placed the epicentre at latitude 17.39 north and longitude 61.18 west. As a result, the quake occurred about 80 kilometres northeast of St. John’s.
Meanwhile, the tremor was also located around 132 kilometres northeast of Brades. It was also about 132 kilometres north-northeast of Pointe-à-Pitre.
The Seismic Research Centre said computer algorithms generated the initial location automatically. However, analysts still need to complete further reviews and confirmations.
Moreover, officials stressed that the information remains preliminary at this stage.
Residents across parts of Antigua and Barbuda reported feeling the shaking shortly after the quake struck. However, authorities received no immediate reports of injuries or structural damage.
The earthquake quickly drew attention across the region because of its strong magnitude and nearby location. Nevertheless, officials continued monitoring the situation throughout the morning.
Meanwhile, the Seismic Research Centre encouraged the public to follow official updates as analysts review additional data.
Earthquakes remain common across the Eastern Caribbean because of the region’s active tectonic boundaries. Therefore, regional agencies continue monitoring seismic activity closely.
Still, Saturday’s quake caused concern for many residents because of its strength. Despite that, authorities reported no major incidents linked to the tremor.
Emergency officials also remained on alert while awaiting updated assessments from regional monitoring agencies.
Overall, the earthquake served as another reminder of the region’s vulnerability to seismic activity. However, officials said the situation remained stable following the morning tremor.
