Guyana Leads Caricom Relief Effort for Venezuela

Guyana has sent 88 containers of relief supplies to Venezuela after the recent earthquake. The shipment left BK Wharf in Kingston, Georgetown, on Tuesday aboard the Motti vessel. The mission brings together Guyana, seven Caribbean Community (Caricom) countries, businesses, and volunteers.

The vessel is carrying food, medicines, cleaning supplies, and 300 water tanks. It also has two earth-moving machines for recovery work. In addition, businesses in Guyana donated supplies. Members of the Venezuelan community also gave support. As a result, the relief shipment grew quickly. President Irfaan Ali started the drive soon after the earthquake.

Senior Minister Dr. Ashni Singh attended the vessel’s departure. He thanked the Caricom countries for their support. He also praised local businesses and volunteers. According to Singh, the mission shows the region’s strong spirit of helping others.

He said the cargo includes Guyanese rice, medicines, cleaning products, water tanks, and heavy equipment. These supplies will help families after the disaster. They will also support clean-up work. Because of this, communities can begin recovery sooner.

The Motti should reach Venezuela within four days. After that, international aid agencies will hand out the supplies. They will work with local partners. This will help the aid reach the people who need it most.

Meanwhile, Minister of Public Utilities and Aviation Deodat Indar praised everyone who took part. He said Guyana acted quickly after President Ali promised help. He also thanked businesses, community groups, and Caricom partners. Together, they filled the vessel with emergency supplies.

Next, Director General of the Civil Defence Commission, Colonel Nazrul Hussain, spoke about the donations. He said people from all 10 administrative regions of Guyana answered the call for help. Volunteers gathered enough supplies to fill 88 containers in just over one week.

Finally, Hussain said Grenada, The Bahamas, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Saint Lucia, Belize, and Jamaica also contributed. He said the quick response showed the strength of Caribbean unity. Above all, the mission shows how countries can work together and help neighbours during difficult times. together during times of need.
