Hazardous Materials Incident Triggers Pentagon Lockdown

A hazardous materials incident prompted security measures at the Pentagon on Thursday. Officials responded after building systems detected an air quality issue inside the complex.

Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell said the Department of Defense activated precautionary measures while officials investigated the situation. He said authorities issued a shelter-in-place order for the affected area and deployed response teams to assist occupants if needed.

The Pentagon Force Protection Agency’s hazardous materials response team responded to the incident. The team worked alongside the Arlington County Fire Department’s Hazardous Materials Team.

Officials locked down multiple floors and corridors inside the Pentagon as crews assessed conditions. According to sources, the restrictions affected floors two through five in corridors four through seven of the building.

Meanwhile, emergency responders continued their investigation. Arlington Fire & EMS confirmed on social media that its hazardous materials team was operating at the Pentagon during the incident.

Sources familiar with the situation told CNN that some police officers inside the building wore gas masks and full chemical protective gear while responding. The protective equipment reflected the precautionary approach taken during the operation.

Parnell said response teams remained in place as authorities worked to determine the significance of the air quality issue. However, officials did not immediately provide details about the source of the concern.
