Browne Calls for Climate Justice and Fairer Financing
Prime Minister Gaston Browne has called on the international community to provide fairer climate financing for small island developing states during the Global Citizen NOW Summit in Australia. He warned that countries contributing relatively little to global greenhouse gas emissions are among those facing the most serious effects of climate change.
Browne highlighted the financial burden placed on vulnerable nations that must borrow at high interest rates to rebuild after natural disasters. He argued that climate funding should be accessible, predictable and affordable, allowing countries to strengthen their resilience without accumulating excessive debt.
The Prime Minister called for grants to support countries affected by climate change, describing such assistance as compensation for climate injustice rather than charity. He also stressed the importance of investing in resilient infrastructure and clean energy.
Looking ahead to the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Antigua and Barbuda in November 2026 and COP31 in Türkiye, Browne said he would push for stronger climate action, improved access to financing and greater accountability from the international community.
