PAHO Ramps Up Venezuela Earthquake Aid
Earthquake Aid
PAHO has activated its emergency response after two strong earthquakes struck Venezuela last week. The quakes measured 7.2 and 7.5 magnitude. The Pan American Health Organization is now working with national authorities. It is assessing urgent health needs across affected areas. It also aims to restore essential health services and prevent further health impacts.
PAHO Director Dr Jarbas Barbosa said the organisation stands with affected communities. He said PAHO is ready to support Venezuela during the emergency. Health teams are already working on the ground. They are carrying out rapid assessments. They are identifying urgent medical needs and gaps in care.
PAHO has placed rapid response teams in neighbouring countries on standby. These teams can deploy quickly if required. The organisation is also preparing medical supplies in Panama. The Regional Strategic Reserve holds essential medicines, equipment, and emergency health materials.
PAHO is working closely with Venezuela’s Ministry of Health. Both sides are coordinating health system response efforts. Teams are conducting joint assessments. They are also mapping hospital capacity and available resources. This helps guide priorities for emergency action and resource allocation.
PAHO confirmed that 21 Emergency Medical Teams are available across the Americas. These teams include trained health professionals and mobile medical units. Three teams from Colombia, the United States, and the Dominican Republic are ready for deployment if needed.
PAHO is also supporting technical operations from its Emergency Operations Center in Washington. Experts are assessing hospital functionality and system capacity. They are identifying urgent needs such as oxygen, medicines, fuel, water, electricity, and trauma care support.
PAHO estimates that 91 hospitals lie in areas affected by strong earthquake intensity. Twenty of these are in zones with very high intensity levels. This does not confirm damage. However, it helps authorities prioritise inspections and safety checks across critical facilities.
PAHO says it will continue working with national authorities, United Nations agencies, and humanitarian partners. The goal is to ensure coordinated health assistance reaches those in need. The organisation also warns that more funding is required. This will help restore services and support displaced families with food and shelter.
