Romanian prosecutors have formally indicted social media influencer Andrew Tate on several serious charges, including trafficking minors, money laundering, sex with a minor and witness tampering.

Prosecutors also indicted his brother, Tristan Tate, for complicity in the alleged crimes. The brothers have denied all allegations against them.

The Tates, who hold US and British citizenship, previously competed as kickboxers. They have mainly lived in Romania since 2017. Romanian authorities began investigating them in December 2022 over allegations that included human trafficking.

According to prosecutors, the brothers allegedly recruited women and girls by pretending to want romantic relationships or marriage. Authorities claim they later forced victims to create pornographic material for a webcam business.

The case includes allegations involving a girl who was 15 at the time. Romanian prosecutors said Andrew Tate met her in Britain in 2012 before moving her to Bucharest. They allege that he used physical violence and intimidation to sexually exploit her.

Prosecutors also accused Tristan Tate of helping Andrew Tate coerce the victim through physical aggression.

Authorities said the brothers received about $1.25 million from video chat earnings linked to the victim. Prosecutors claim that the amount represented around 80% of her earnings. They also allege that the brothers attempted to launder the money by purchasing four luxury vehicles.

The brothers’ Romanian lawyer, Eugen Vidineac, said their legal team will closely examine the indictment. He said they will challenge any problems involving the evidence, legal process, or law. The brothers continue to reject the allegations.

The Tates are currently in US custody while a judge considers Britain’s request for their extradition. British authorities want them over separate rape allegations. Romanian prosecutors have not yet confirmed whether they will also seek extradition from the United States.

The brothers could face a trial in Romania even if they remain outside the country. However, proceedings will not begin immediately. A preliminary court chamber must first review the indictment and case files.

The Tates were previously indicted in Romania on human trafficking charges. In late 2024, an appeals court returned that case to prosecutors after ruling that some evidence could not be used.
