Report Highlights Health, Education and Barbuda Upgrades

Report from Wednesday’s Cabinet meeting highlighted major developments in healthcare, education, and Barbuda infrastructure. Additionally, officials approved several new national initiatives.

The meeting opened with prayer and reflection led by a Catholic deacon. He encouraged leaders to serve with wisdom, humility, and compassion.

#1 Barbuda Land Registry Approved

The Cabinet approved plans to launch the Barbuda Land Registry by August 31, 2026. Initially, Antigua’s existing Land Registry will manage Barbuda’s records.

Officials also continue preparing 216 acres at Louis Hill for Barbudans under the government’s $1 land programme.

#2 Agriculture School Upgrades Continue

The Cabinet reviewed ongoing upgrades at the School of Agriculture at the former Glanvilles Secondary School.

Workers are renovating classrooms, laboratories, and student facilities ahead of the September 2026 school term. Additionally, the project includes poultry pens and upgraded food laboratories.

#3 Eye Care Programme Expands

Cabinet welcomed a visiting team from the Trinidad Eye Hospital. Officials expect the partnership to provide more than 400 eye surgeries this year.

Meanwhile, health officials plan to screen 10,000 students for vision problems. The programme includes 6,000 primary students and 4,000 secondary students.

Officials also confirmed that free eyeglasses will arrive next week under the Prime Ministerial Vision Initiative.

#4 and #5 Barbuda Healthcare Improves

The Cabinet approved several healthcare upgrades for Barbuda. Importantly, officials plan to restore childbirth services on the island.

Additionally, Hannah Thomas Hospital will receive laboratory services. Barbudans will also soon book X-rays and MRI appointments directly from Barbuda.

#6 Education Projects Advance

Cabinet received updates on construction at the new Five Islands Primary School and the UWI Five Islands expansion project.

Education Minister Daryll Matthew also secured 10 scholarships from Hangzhou Normal University in China. The scholarships focus on entrepreneurship and e-business.

#7 Leadership Summit Approved

The Cabinet approved the Ministry of Education’s Leadership Summit 2026, scheduled for May 26 to 28.

Officials said the summit will support new regional education programmes and improve student learning outcomes.
