PIOJ Warns AI Could Reduce Working and Middle-Class Jobs in Jamaica

The Planning Institute of Jamaica (PIOJ) has warned that the growing adoption of artificial intelligence could lead to a reduction in jobs traditionally held by working and middle-class Jamaicans. The warning comes as AI technology becomes more widely used across business, finance, and administrative sectors.

PIOJ officials said many routine and clerical roles are most at risk, as automation continues to replace tasks previously done by humans. They noted that while AI may improve efficiency and productivity, it could also displace workers if new skills are not developed quickly enough.

The institute is calling for stronger investment in education and training programmes to help workers adapt to the changing labour market. It stressed that reskilling and upskilling will be essential to ensure Jamaicans remain competitive in emerging industries.

Officials also highlighted that AI could create new opportunities in areas such as technology, data analysis, and digital services. However, they warned that without proper planning, the benefits of AI could be unevenly distributed across society.
