PM Vows Worker Renaissance With Livable Wage and Stronger Safety
PM Browne says workers will enter a new era of dignity and progress in Antigua and Barbuda.
PM Browne made the announcement at a Labour Day rally on Monday. The Antigua and Barbuda Trades and Labour Union and the Antigua and Barbuda Labour Party hosted the event.
PM Browne described his vision as a “renaissance” for the working class. He said his administration comes from working-class roots.
In addition, PM Browne confirmed a shift from minimum wage to a livable wage model. This change aims to help workers meet rising living costs.
PM Browne also promised steady salary increases over time. He urged private businesses to share profits more fairly with staff.
Furthermore, PM Browne said workers deserve respect in every workplace. He called them central to national development.
PM Browne addressed the hotel sector directly. He warned against unfair treatment of employees. He also pushed for better pay balance across industries.
At the same time, PM Browne outlined plans to improve public facilities. The government will upgrade and clean public buildings. Public Works will also increase staffing for maintenance.
This move aims to improve safety and hygiene for workers. It will also strengthen overall working conditions.
PM Browne confirmed that road rehabilitation will continue nationwide. He described workers as the backbone of national progress.
PM Browne also warned managers to respect local workers. He said foreign supervisors who fail to comply could face deportation.
In addition, PM Browne ordered officials to complete COVID-19 back pay processing. He said funds are already available in the Treasury.
PM Browne highlighted training and education programs for citizens. These programs aim to expand the middle class.
The Second Chance Program will support this effort. He said every adult should gain either a degree or trade skill.
