WHO Warns Ebola Outbreak in Congo Is Spreading Rapidly

The World Health Organization (WHO) has raised concerns over a rapidly spreading Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo, warning that the situation is becoming increasingly dangerous. On May 22, 2026, the agency upgraded the outbreak’s risk level as infections continued to rise.

WHO Director-General Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said health officials are closely monitoring the spread of the virus, particularly in densely populated areas where transmission could accelerate quickly. Authorities are working to trace contacts, isolate cases, and expand vaccination efforts to contain the outbreak.

Health experts say challenges such as limited healthcare resources, population movement, and insecurity in some affected areas are making containment more difficult. The outbreak has already resulted in multiple deaths, raising fears of wider regional spread if stronger measures are not implemented quickly.

The WHO is urging international support to help Congo strengthen its response, while reminding neighbouring countries to remain alert and improve preparedness efforts. Ebola is a severe and often fatal disease that spreads through direct contact with infected bodily fluids.
