UWI Five Islands Reaches 2,000 Students

UWI

UWI Five Islands Campus now boasts nearly 2,000 students after only four years. The campus also plans a major EC$300 million expansion.

The Government of Antigua and Barbuda established the campus despite early criticism. Some critics doubted a small nation could support a university campus.

Others believed outstanding arrears would block the project. However, the government moved ahead with the plan.

Some critics also argued that the UWI was facing political pressure. Others claimed former secondary school buildings would not suit university education.

Despite those concerns, the government says the campus proved critics wrong. Student enrollment continues growing steadily each year.

The UWI Five Islands Campus began with fewer than 350 students. Today, nearly 2,000 students attend classes across several programmes.

In addition, the campus now offers master’s degree programmes. Officials also plan to introduce PhD programmes in the future.

Meanwhile, the government prepares to invest EC$300 million into expansion works. The project will also provide new primary and secondary schools for Five Islands.

Officials say the university remains central to Antigua and Barbuda’s educational development. The government also plans tuition-free tertiary education for citizens.

Leaders believe the campus will help reshape the country’s workforce. Officials also expect stronger opportunities for future generations.

The statement praised Education Minister Daryll Matthew for his leadership. Officials commended his determination and commitment to national education goals.

“The Minister of Education, Honourable Daryll Matthew, has delivered for the youth of Antigua and Barbuda,” the statement said.

The government also thanked Sir David Harrison for his contribution. In addition, officials highlighted the role of ABICE and ABCAS.

ABICE now forms part of the Antigua and Barbuda College of Advanced Studies. The institution provides training in technical and trade skills.

Officials say students can gain certification and improve earning opportunities through training. They also believe technical education will strengthen the national workforce.

The government described the UWI Five Islands Campus as part of a national renaissance. Leaders expect continued growth in higher education across Antigua and Barbuda.

Overall, officials say the university has exceeded expectations since opening. They also believe future expansion will create even greater educational opportunities.
